Brayton continues our 16 year development efforts in the areas of gas cooled nuclear reactors. Our first major project, at the formation of the company 16 years ago, led to key developments in the area of pebble bed reactors, compact heat exchangers, and turbomachinery design. Over the years, Brayton has worked with many companies, government labs, and universities to advance this inherently safe technology. The silicon carbide-encapsulated pebbles do not fail in the event of a loss of coolant. This combined with the elimination of steam boiler, replaced by helium cooling, avoids the historical safety issues in today’s nuclear power plants. Brayton’s new work will lead to further improvements in reliability, cost, and efficiency.
